I had never imagined myself being a teacher. I had lofty ideas to be a theoretical mathematician studying wormholes and string theory but I discovered while studying that this was not the lucrative career I had imagined as a teenager. After spending a few years trying every job imaginable I decided to start volunteering at a school as I wanted a career change and had always enjoyed explaining complex concepts to many siblings growing up. Luckily, I was introduced to the headmaster at Redland high school for girls, and I started in their Nursery class. He pushed me to get qualified and a few years later my brother invited me over to Moscow to work with him. I have been here for over 10 years now and I have been lucky to work in many different schools and this is now my second year at ENS. Teaching for me is all about seeing that moment of understanding or the moment when a child lights up with excitement about a topic or subject that they used to dislike or avoid. Seeing children interested to know more and wanting to learn is what keeps me coming back to teach year after year.
