September Adventures at ENS Mosfilm

ENS primary school students began the year with exciting trips and the exploration of new topics.

In the United Kingdom, children become school pupils at the age of five, and this year our Year 1 class had a first month full of engaging games and activities. They started the year by studying the topics “Animals,” “Our Bodies,” and “Feelings.” The children learned that there are different groups of animals—birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. They were also fascinated to learn that many animals match the colour of their habitat, which is called camouflage. With paintbrushes in hand, the children mixed many colours to create the best camouflage patterns for their snakes.

A doctor visited the class to talk about how the human body is structured. The children loved it and asked lots of questions, and they also learned a great deal about the senses.

This month, the ESL group learned a lot about the jungle, and to wrap up the topic they went on an exciting trip to the zoo. The first animal they saw there was a large Siberian tiger that came out to greet the visitors. The children really enjoyed seeing the animals at the zoo, and during the trip they managed to see most of them, including the reptile enclosures. The day after the excursion, the children wrote a short story about their favourite animal. Some described a polar bear, others a giraffe, a cheetah, and even venomous snakes. The class also learned about tribes living deep in the jungle, and by the end of the school week each child made a mask representing members of these tribes, while the whole group listened to their music.

The first school week in September was short, so the Year 2 class talked about their summer holidays and got to know new friends. They showed photos from their trips, shared stories about seaside adventures, and pinned them to a map to show where everyone had been. To get to know each other better, the children played games, held competitions, and learned each other’s names. Together with their teachers, they also wrote classroom rules and put them up on the walls.

The next topic was “Teamwork.” The children learned how to work together to achieve better results in class, played sports games, and придумали many new ideas for group activities. Their games included “Hungry Hippos” and “Crossing the River” by stepping on imaginary stones.

In the second half of September, the class explored the theme “Healthy Lifestyle.” They studied how healthy foods affect the human body, the impact of sugar, and its role in our diet, and discussed how to stay healthy by eating a variety of foods. A visual, hands-on conclusion to this topic was a trip to the “Living Systems” museum.

In September, the Year 3 class studied the topic of excavations—how they are carried out and how ancient and lost objects are found. At the end of the month, the class visited the Archaeology Museum. There, the children examined examples of historical materials and household items and learned what our ancestors used many years ago. The children acted as palaeontologists and carried out their own excavations, finding bones, ancient coins, and pottery shards. The guide’s talk and the exhibition inspired them to explore a new topic about the Stone Age and the Iron Age.
