Field Trip: ENS Karamyshevskaya Campus

On March 27, the children visited Fire Station No. 29 together with their teachers.

We were welcomed by a team led by a friendly shift supervisor. One of the fire engines was heading out on a call, while we began our tour inside the station itself. We were shown the dispatch room, which receives emergency calls around the clock. The children also learned where firefighters rest and have meals, and discovered that they have a gym for training—because during a fire, elevators do not work, and firefighters may need to carry heavy equipment up as high as the 30th floor.

They also have a classroom where they undergo serious training on how to save lives. Of course, we were shown the famous fire poles that everyone often sees on TV—firefighters slide down them in seconds from the second floor to the engines before heading out on an emergency call. Everything was explained very clearly: what happens when a call comes in, what firefighting tools are carried in the truck, how oxygen masks work to save people in smoke, and how a device can help locate people in darkness and smoke-filled rooms.

Under close supervision, each child had a chance to “put out” a Christmas tree set up in front of them using a fire hose. We all tried on a firefighter’s helmet and even sat inside a real fire engine! We also heard many true stories and facts about fires—including that there is a tool that can fight a fire even through closed doors, and that a high-pressure water jet mixed with metal particles can cut through concrete. The most exciting part was learning that this tool was invented here in Russia! While we were exploring the details of the fire hose, the station received an emergency call, and we saw how quickly the team responded as one of the engines left with sirens on to rescue people from a fire.

After taking a closer look at the fire engine’s cabin, we took a few photos as a keepsake and then headed back to school.
